Optimizing CAM-based instruction cache designs for low-power embedded systems

چکیده
Energy consumption and power dissipation are important concerns in the design of embedded systems and they will become even more crucial with finer process geometry, higher frequencies, deeper pipelines and wider issue designs. In particular, the instruction cache consumes more energy than any other processor module, especially with commonly used highly associative CAM-based implementations. Two energy-efficient approaches for highly associative CAM-based instruction cache designs are presented by means of using a segmented wordline and a predictor-based instruction fetch mechanism. The latter is based on the fact that not all instructions in a given I-cache fetch are used due to taken branches. The proposed Fetch Mask Predictor unit determines which instructions in a cache access will actually be used to avoid fetching any of the other instructions. Both proposed approaches are evaluated for an embedded 4-wide issue processor in 100 nm technology. Experimental results show average I-cache energy savings of 48% and overall processor energy savings of 19%. 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

High-quality ISA synthesis for low-power cache designs in embedded microprocessors
Energy efficiency, performance, area, and cost are critical concerns in designing microprocessors for embedded systems, such as portable handheld computing and personal telecommunication devices. This work introduces framework-based instruction set architecture (ISA) synthesis, which reduces code size and energy consumption by tailoring the instruction set to the requirement of a targeted appli...
متن کاملThe Potential of Temperature-Aware Configurable Cache on Energy Reduction
Active power used to be the primary contributor to total power dissipation of CMOS designs, but with the technology scaling, the share of leakage in total power consumption of digital systems continues to grow. Moreover, temperature is another factor that exponentially increases the leakage current. In this paper, we show the effects of temperature and technology nodes on the optimal (minimum-e...
متن کاملA Behavior-based Adaptive Access-mode for Low-power Set-associative Caches in Embedded Systems
Modern embedded processors commonly use a set-associative scheme to reduce cache misses. However, a conventional set-associative cache has its drawbacks in terms of power consumption because it has to probe all ways to reduce the access time, although only the matched way is used. The energy spent in accessing the other ways is wasted, and the percentage of such energy will increase as cache as...
متن کاملWay Memoization to Reduce Fetch Energy in Instruction Caches
Instruction caches consume a large fraction of the total power in modern low-power microprocessors. In particular, set-associative caches, which are preferred because of lower miss rates, require greater access energy on hits than direct-mapped caches; this is because of the need to locate instructions in one of several ways. Way prediction has been proposed to reduce power dissipation in conve...
متن کاملAn Interpolative Analytical Cache Model with Application to Performance-Power Design Space Exploration
Caches are known to consume up to half of all system power in embedded processors. Co-optimizing performance and power consumption of the cache subsystem is therefore an important step in the design of embedded systems, especially those employing application specific instruction processors. One of the main difficulty in such attempts is that cache behaviors are application as well as cache-stru...
